Long before Miley Cyrus was turning heads, she was winning hearts as the precocious Hannah Montana character.  One of her best songs in the 2009 Hannah Montana movie was “The Climb.”  The lyrics of the song tell the story of Miley’s life, as well as the difficult but rewarding journey that everyone takes.  The country song influence on Cyrus’ life is undeniable; she is Billy Ray Cyrus’s daughter!  The Climb seeks to combine country lyrics with a power ballad style.  Throughout the song listeners can hear piano chords, guitar cords and even violins.

The song of the film was written by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe and performed by Hannah, er Miley Cyrus.  The song was well liked in the music industry, particularly by country fans.  It was nominated for the Movie Song category at the 52nd Grammy Awards.  The song also did great sales, becoming a top 10 hit in the US and other countries like Norway and Australia.  It hit a high #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was one of the top 10 sellers of 2009.  In less than six months, the album had gone double platinum. 

The video of the song tells the story in images: Cyrus climbs a mountain and sings, while we see scenes of the Hannah Montana movie.  Not only did Miley Cyrus make a name for herself with The Climb lyrics, but other artists have also covered the catchy tune.  It has been featured on American Idol and other reality shows and covered in a big way by Joe McElderry. 

The Climb is, of course, meant for a young female audience, so don’t expect anything cryptic or overly brooding.  Lyrics of the song include inspirational lines like “Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side, It’s the climb, yeah!”  If you remove the image of Hannah Montana “roughing it” from your mind (it’s hard to imagine Cyrus’ upbringing as particularly tumultuous) you will actually read some well versed lyrics.  Many of the verses in The Climb lyrics are challenging and at times, prickingly honest; lines like “There’s a voice inside my head saying, You’ll never reach it,” and “My faith is shaking,” and “Cause there’s always gonna be another mountain” get the point across.

The victory is in surviving and pressing on, indeed, the journey.  It’s the sort of feel-good song that Disney and Hanna Montana fans adore.  Sing along with your kids and “keep your head held high.”
