Best Handgun Stopping Power – Smith and Wesson 500 with the 500 S&W Mag

Sometimes you may want a handgun with the most stopping power you can possibly get. I live in Montana, and have plenty of friends from Alaska, two of the places where wildlife is the biggest in North America. Some people think that huge guns are overkill in any situation. When you have a massive Grizzly bear walking around your tent at night, and you’re not sure if he’s ready to maul or just curious, is there such thing as a handgun that is too big? I’m not advocating shooting any bear you come across, but in certain situations running away and pepper spray will not work, and you need to rely on whatever weapon you have. That is why we want a gun that is able to stop almost any living thing in its tracks. But what gun can claim to be the Best Handgun Stopping Power?

We have chosen the Smith and Wesson 500 (S&W 500) and its .500 S&W Magnum round as the Best Handgun Stopping Power gun system based off 3 different categories; purpose, round ballistics and barrel length.

Purpose

The original purpose of the S&W500 was to be able to hunt and take down any large game in North America. This Smith and Wesson is considered the “most powerful production revolver in the world today”. The gun actually has the ability to be reliably hunted with out to 200 yards, which for a handgun is very impressive. The large “X-Gun” frame, forward balance, rubber grips and large mass help it to be accurate out to those long distances by controlling recoil and muzzle rise well. I’ve shot this gun, and it is a BIG gun to shoot.

Round Ballistics

The S&W 500 shoots a .500 S&W Magnum round, which is the most power production handgun round available today. The round has a velocity of up to 2,075 ft/s and a kinetic energy of up to 3,031 ft-lb, depending on the bullet weight and powder load. Compare that energy to a .40 S&W, which only gets a maximum of 490 ft-lb. You can’t get much better stopping power than that in a production handgun.

Barrel Length

The S&W500 comes in a few different barrel lengths, ranging from 2 ¾” out to 10″. A longer barrel length means that you will be able to aim the gun better, and the round will have more energy and velocity coming out of the barrel. This is the cartridge will have more time to ignite and fully explode, and pass on more energy to the bullet while it is still in the barrel, a concentrated and directed explosion. The longer barrel is also good for accuracy, because of the increased plane of sight, just like a rifle.

Bottom Line

If You Are looking for a gun purely for stopping power, the S&W500 is the gun you are looking for. It has the ability to take down just about anything, as it was originally intended to hunt large game from out to 200 yards. The Smith and Wesson 500 is truly the Best Handgun Stopping Power that is mass produced today.

This Is It: The Best of Faith No More

Often snickered at by critics during the band’s colorful career, it wasn’t until after Faith No More’s split that the group began receiving the recognition that it deserved the first time around — when a legion of “nu-metal” bands admitted that FNM was a major influence. With one FNM “hits” compilation already in the marketplace (1998′s Who Cares a Lot: Greatest Hits), it’s rather confusing as to why another set, 2003′s This Is It: The Best of Faith No More, would surface relatively soon after. What makes the two releases different is that the former was a double-disc set (one disc being “hits,” the other rarities), while the latter is solely a “best-of” set, and contains a slightly larger track listing. Starting off with the “Chuck Mosely Years” (FNM’s original vocalist), you can trace the band quickly building its own original sound on such tracks as “We Care a Lot” and “Anne’s Song,” before Mike Patton’s arrival proved to be the final piece to the FNM puzzle. The majority of the selections on This Is It are with Patton at the helm, including their breakthrough rap-metal hybrid “Epic,” as well as more challenging material when the group really hit its stride — “Midlife Crisis,” “Be Aggressive,” “Digging the Grave,” “Evidence,” “Last Cup of Sorrow,” and the band’s cover of the Commodores’ “Easy.” In addition to the hits, a smattering of rarities is included, such as the Real Thing outtakes “The Cowboy Song” and “The Perfect Crime,” plus a 1990 live version of the early track “As the Worm Turns.” As with most “best-of” sets, longtime fans may squabble about key tracks that are absent (“Caffeine,” “Ricochet,” “Gentle Art of Making Enemies,” “Stripsearch,” etc.), but overall, This Is It: The Best of Faith No More is a fine collection of one of hard rock’s all-time best. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Mike Bordin – Vocals (Background), Conga, Drums; Bill Gould – Vocals (Background), Bass; Chuck Mosley – Vocals; Jim Martin – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Jon Hudson – Guitar; Mike Patton – Vocals; Roddy Bottum – Vocals (Background), Keyboards; Trey Spruance – Guitar

Party Lights: More of the Best

Party Lights is the sequel to 1994′s Stellar Funk, and it picks up where its predecessor left off, focusing on Slave in the ’80s while tying up loose ends from the previous decade. The group made a smooth transition into the ’80s and remained formidable throughout the first half of that decade; though they rounded off the gritty edges that made them one of the best funk bands of the ’70s, their increased reliance on slower tempos and brighter sounds had more to do with evolution than a compromise for the sake of accessibility. Like Stellar Funk, Party Lights scatters a handful of tracks from Slave’s offshoots, including a track apiece from Steve Arrington, Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame, and Aurra (who deserve to be regarded as a group in its own right, not just a pet project of Arrington’s). The non-Slave inclusions are particularly puzzling since these Rhino compilations fail to exhaust Slave’s charting singles — neither “Shake It Up” (a number 22 black single) nor “Do You Like It” (number 73) are included. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Delbert “Big D” Taylor – Flugelhorn, Vocals, Keyboards, Percussion, Trumpet; Frederick Zlotkin – Strings; Guy Lumia – Strings; Harold Kohon – Strings; Harry Lookofsky – Strings; Jennifer Ivory – Handclapping, Percussion; Jesse Levine – Strings; Jimmy Douglass – Vocals (Background); Jonathan Abra

As a songwriter, performer, occasional vocalist, session man, bandleader, and superb Crescent City piano player, Huey “Piano” Smith was essential to the success of Johnny Vincent’s New Orleans label Ace Records in the late ’50s and early ’60s. Not only did Smith chart in 1957 with his classic “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” he also wrote the 1959 smash “Sea Cruise” for Frankie Ford and had his hand in nearly everything that Vincent recorded, and most — if not all — of it holds up well some 60 years later. This wonderful set has both “Pneumonia” and “Sea Cruise” as well as over a dozen other gems from Ace and its subsidiary, Vin Records. Vincent, much like Jamaica’s reggae producers, would often use a stellar backing track to build new songs, trying out different singers and approaches over the original track, and the Ace vaults feature a ton of unreleased material of this sort that is of an unusually high quality, and tracks here like “Alimony,” a delightful, fun song about a monkey dealing with the divorce courts that was Ford’s follow-up to “Sea Cruise,” feature different vocalists (Peg Leg Martin voices this version of “Alimony”) that bring out different shadings and nuances in the songs — all with Smith’s piano as a rhythmic anchor. There’s so much to love in this set, including Curley Moore, Gerri Hall, and Benny Spellman’s “I Tried,” Smith’s intimate and demo-sounding “Mississippi,” and a Smith duet with Gerri Hall, “I Think You’re Jivin’ Me,” and if there are more expansive surveys of Smith’s contributions to Ace Records out there, the rarity of some of the tracks presented in this set makes it more than distinctive. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

Forever and More: The Best of Michael Schenker

Forever and More: The Best of Michael Schenker

$19.19

It’s only fitting that a “best-of” set would be assembled for the solo work of German metal guitarist Michael Schenker. After all, he was an integral part of one of the genre’s all-time best live sets, UFO’s 1979 classic, Strangers in the Night. By now, Schenker’s solo career has yielded more releases than his tenure with UFO, and the 2003 24-track comp Forever and More: The Best of Michael Schenker focuses mostly on live readings of favorites from his solo albums, but also manages to include several UFO standards as well. It turns out, however, that the live takes on Forever and More weren’t recorded especially for this release, as most of the selections come from a pair of earlier solo Schenker releases, 1997′s The Michael Schenker Story Live and 1999′s The Unforgiven World Tour: Live. Still, for fans just discovering the guitar wizardry of Schenker, Forever and More is a good place to start, as his playing was always more fiery on the concert stage. While it’s impossible to ever top the aforementioned Strangers in the Night, Schenker does an admirable job of ripping through such UFO standards as “Natural Thing,” “Doctor Doctor,” “Lights Out,” and “Rock Bottom,” as well as such early solo gems as “Into the Arena” and “Captain Nemo” (also included is a cover of the Scorpions’ “Another Piece of Meat”). While a few clunkers pop up (especially several best-forgotten tracks from the late ’80s/early ’90s — “Save Yourself,” “All the Way from Memphis,” etc.), Forever and More: The Best of Michael Schenker is a fine Schenker starting point. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

More, More, More: The Best of the Andrea True Connection [Collectables]

$6.38

Although it’s not as in-depth as The Greatest Hits — a European compilation released in 1999 that was fairly available in the States — this disc should satisfy just about anyone who wants to go deeper into the music of Andrea True than just her biggest hit “More, More, More.” Containing each one of her charting singles (“Call Me,” “Keep It Up Longer,” “Party Line,” “What’s Your Name, What’s Your Number,” and “New York, You Got Me Dancing” were her others), it shows that True had more going for her than the one extremely popular song, despite hardly being one of the premier disco artists. One detracting factor here is that the single edits are given the nod over album versions and 12″ mixes. [Note: The contents of this release are identical to that of a disc with the same title released in 2003 by BMG Special Products.] ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Given that t.A.T.u. only had two albums to their name when The Best arrived in the fall of 2006, it might seem like it was a little early for a greatest-hits album — which is both true and untrue. For most acts, such a quickly arriving hits compilation would be a little premature, but by 2006 the duo’s lesbianism shtick was not only exposed as nothing more than a marketing gimmick, but they had also parted ways with their label, Interscope, which meant that their act was outdated and that they no longer had the support of a major label, so it was the perfect time to chronicle the half-decade where they were a Europop sensation. The Best does this exhaustively, offering up the hits — “All the Things She Said,” “Not Gonna Get Us,” “How Soon Is Now,” “Friend or Foe,” “All About Us,” plus the new single “Gomenasai” — plus a bunch of remixes and some album tracks. Since a little t.A.T.u. can go a long way, it’s best to get all the big hits in one place; the rest of the record might still be filler even on a hits disc, but at least it has all the big songs, which The Best certainly does, and that should satisfy any listener who considers the Russian duo a guilty pleasure. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Robert Earl Keen is an archetypical Texas singer/songwriter, someone who can mine both laughter and tragedy from life along the dusty margins of life in the Lone Star State, and seeing that he’s been recording good-to-great albums of his material since 1984, a comprehensive and well-programmed compilation offering a fully rounded introduction to his music would be more than welcome. However, 2007′s Best isn’t quite that album. While Keen had recorded a dozen albums by the time this was released, Best draws its 17 tunes from only six discs, two of which are live albums and three of which (Farm Fresh Onions, What I Really Mean and Live at the Ryman) are relatively recent efforts that presumably dominate the second half of this collection because they were easy to license rather than because they represent Keen’s finest work. Quite frankly, a number of Keen’s best songs are missing, such as “Dreadful Selfish Crime,” “The Front Porch Song” and “I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight,” while fan favorites like “The Five Pound Bass,” “The Buckin’ Song,” “Barbecue” and “The Bluegrass Widow” don’t make the cut, either. That said, if Best doesn’t quite present Keen’s best material (or even all his best known), there’s little arguing that what’s here is great stuff; Keen, who compiled this disc, has edited a satisfying sampler, hitting a graceful balance between crowd pleasers like “Merry Christmas from the Family” and “The Road Goes on Forever” (the latter prefaced by a rambling story in which Keen loses his car and his girl but meets Willie Nelson) and more resonant numbers like “Corpus Christi Bay,” “Whenever Kindness Fails” and “For Love.” If you’re looking for a concise, career-spanning overview of Robert Earl Keen’s long career in music, Best isn’t as much help as you might wish, but the consistent quality is a sure convincer if you or someone you know wants some evidence of Keen’s very real talent as a tunesmith and a performer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Michael Snow – Tenor Banjo, Bodhran; Bryan Duckworth – Fiddle; Dan Huckabee – Dobro; Danny Barnes – Banjo; Denice Franke – Vocal Harmony, Vocals (Background), Harmony Vocals, Vocals; Eamon McLoughlin – Fiddle, Viola; Elliott Rogers – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Vocals (Background); Garry Tallent – Bass (Upright), Bass (Electric);

Unfortunately, the Cardigans are best known in the United States for their 1997 single “Lovefool,” a fluke Top 40 hit thanks to its inclusion on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s splashy updating of Romeo and Juliet. In that context, the Swedish quintet came off as Europop lightweights, Ace of Base with a bit more indie cred. This truly did the group a disservice, because as Best of the Cardigans reveals, Nina Persson and company were a truly gifted pop band that delivered some of the most intoxicating singles of the ’90s. Proceeding in chronological order from 1994′s Emmerdale through 2005′s Super Extra Gravity, the 22 tracks are front-loaded with many of the band’s finest, from their winsome debut single “Rise and Shine” to the tongue in cheek lounge pop of the singles from 1995′s Life, the glorious “Carnival” (arguably their career high point) and “Daddy’s Car.” A more conventional alt-rock sound enters circa 1997′s First Band on the Moon’s bitter kiss-off “Been It,” and by the time of later albums like the electronica-inspired Gran Turismo and the moody Long Gone Before Daylight, the Cardigans seemed stung by misapprehensions about their earlier work that had overlooked its ironic humor and seen only the bubblegummy surface. That seems to have changed, however, if the 22-second long “Bonus Track” and the glitchy dance-rock take on Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House,” with guest vocals by Tom Jones, that end the disc are any indication. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

One More Dream: The Very Best of Gerry Rafferty

One More Dream: The Very Best of Gerry Rafferty

$24.79

Missing only one of his five charted singles, One More Dream serves as an effective gathering of Gerry Rafferty’s adult contemporary-styled pop. Known for his smooth midnight sound and calming voice, Rafferty began his solo chart success with “Baker Street” in 1978. Supported by the famous saxophone solo of Raphael Ravenscroft, the single reached the number two spot and held that position for six weeks, while Rafferty’s follow-up single, “Right Down the Line,” peaked at number 12 only three months later. Both singles came from the platinum selling City to City album, easily his most solid release. One More Dream covers all of Rafferty’s finest moments, with “Night Owl,” “Days Gone Down,” and “Get It Right Next Time” representing 1979′s Night Owl album in which the latter two were Top 40 singles. No hits collection would be complete without acknowledging his brief career with Stealers Wheel, which is where Rafferty had his inaugural rub with the Top Ten chart, achieving a number-six placing with “Stuck in the Middle With You,” resurrected again on the 1992 soundtrack to the movie Reservoir Dogs. But even the unfamiliar material is wonderfully subdued and comfortably wholesome, brushed with relaxing acoustic guitar and laid-back, lenitive lyrics . Both “Tired of Talkin’” and “Moonlight and Gold” stream with late-night enchantment, and the bouncy guitar enthusiasm of “The Girl’s Got No Confidence” is a solid pop effort. Even though “Home and Dry” is left off of this compilation, One More Dream is still a suitable assembly of this quieted performer’s best work. ~ Mike DeGagne, Rovi Performers: Gerry Rafferty – Vocals, Guitar

This two-disc compilation covers highlights from M-nus’ evolution, including many releases previously limited to vinyl. The blistering one-two-three punch of Heartthrob’s fantastic “Baby Kate” (remixed here by Konrad Black), Marc Houle’s anthemic “Bay of Figs,” and the infectious “48 Hour Crack in Your Bass” starts things off quite nicely before the comp switches gears into earlier material from Hawtin himself. While there is plenty here that will capture the attention of die-hard fans (especially the fantastic Mathew Jonson single “Decompression”), inclusions of earlier material from Niederflur and Theorem would have given a more thorough snapshot of the label’s history. Still, together with the Minimize to Maximize compilations released in previous years, this triple threat contains some of the best minimal techno of the past decade, bar none. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi

There are a myriad of import Bonnie Tyler hit collections. This one features songs that appear on many others, but does offer a few highlights. Her biggest U.S. and European hits are here, notably “Holding Out for a Hero,” “It’s a Heartache,” “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man),” “Lost in France,” and her timeless, signature song, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which sounds just as good (or better) many years after its original release. Buyer beware, however, this version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” is severely edited, about three minutes shorter than the definitive, original version. Other highlights include “More Than a Lover”; “Save Up All Your Tears,” which was a hit for Cher; “The Best,” which was a hit for Tina Turner; “Don’t Turn Around,” a hit for Ace of Base; her passionate take on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”; and her cover of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” There are better hits compilations on this artist, but this one is good for the casual fan, if they can overlook the travesty of the truncated “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” ~ Jose Promis, Rovi

An all-girl Latina quartet from L.A., Go Betty Go transcend gender and racial qualifiers to deliver one of the most purely enjoyable pop-punk releases of 2005. Using occasional Spanish lyrics and Los Lobos-style Mexican folk touches (the fingerpicked acoustic guitar on “No Hay Perdon,” ex-Pogues James Fearnley’s guest accordion on “The Pirate Song,” etc.) to color the otherwise straightforward guitar pop tunes, the group focuses on the songs’ melodic strengths instead of bowing to louder-and-faster punk orthodoxy. Most importantly, singer Nicolette Vilar has a terrific voice, both far more technically adept than the average punk singer (male or female) and emotionally in tune with the up-front, assertive lyrics. Gems like “I’m from L.A.,” the best sideswipe at the city since the Go-Go’s’ “This Town,” and the no-nonsense “Runaway” showcase Go Betty Go’s already impressive strengths, but it’s the more mature material like “No Hay Perdon” and the stirring, anthemic “Laugh Again” that suggests that better is still to come. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: James Fearnley – Accordion; Ted Hutt – Banjo

Most of J. Mascis’ ’90s output was humdrum and samey, all whiney lyrics and metalhead guitar solos slopped over washed-out grunge riffs. By the time he dropped the Dinosaur Jr. moniker and released Martin + Me, it wasn’t just because he sang with the same hound dog warble that people compared him to Neil Young; it was also because he seemed to have succumbed to half-assedness. That considered, More Light sounds pretty damned vital. The sameyness is still there, granted, but like Young, his spiritual godfather, Mascis has a way of making his ramshackle melodies downright endearing, and if you’re a kindhearted soul, that’ll allow you to forgive the half-assed stuff. The best tracks find Mascis sticking his head up out of the murk of guitar noise and lazy melody to deliver slices of snappy grunge pop: “Sameday” bounces between minor-key whine and major-key stomp as Mascis croaks his way through a stoner’s lament, while the bouncy “Can’t I Take This On” shows that there’s a lighter side to the dude’s brooding mewl. Even with production help from Kevin Shields, his guitar skronk is only ever-present background buzz, but noise is only half the point: too lazy to find a new bag of tricks, Mascis is squeezing every drop of dingy melody and begrudging sincerity out of growing old and just coasting along. If that’s the best he can do, so be it. ~ Christian Hoard, Rovi Performers: Bob Pollard – Vocals; Kevin Shields – Percussion, Vocals, Guitar

More of the Monkees

More of the Monkees

$7.63

The Monkees second album More of the Monkees lived up to its title. It was more successful commercially, spending an amazing 70 weeks on the Billboard charts and ultimately becoming the 12th biggest selling album of all time. It had more producers and writers involved since big-shots like Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Jeff Barry and Neil Sedaka, as well as up-and-comers like Neil Diamond all grabbed for a piece of the pie after Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the men who made the debut album such a smash, were elbowed out by music supervisor Don Kirshner. The album also has more fantastic songs than the debut. Tracks like “I’m a Believer,” “She,” “Mary, Mary,” ” (I’m Not Your) Stepping Stone,” “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow),” “Your Auntie Grizelda,” and “Sometime in the Morning” are on just about every Monkees hits collection and, apart from the novelty “Grizelda,” they are among the best pop/rock heard in the ’60s or any decade since. The band themselves still had relatively little involvement in the recording process, apart from providing the vocals along with Mike Nesmith’s writing and producing of two tracks (the hair-raising rocker “Mary, Mary” and the folk-rock gem “The Kind of Girl I Could Love”). In fact, they were on tour when the album was released and had to go to the record shop and buy copies for themselves. As with the first album though, it really doesn’t matter who was involved when the finished product is this great. Listen to Micky Dolenz and the studio musicians rip through “Stepping Stone” or smolder through “She,” listen to the powerful grooves of “Mary, Mary” or the heartfelt playing and singing on “Sometime in the Morning” and dare to say the Monkees weren’t a real band. They were! The tracks on More of the Monkees (with the exception of the aforementioned “Your Auntie Grizelda ” and the sickly sweet “The Day We Fell in Love,” which regrettably introduces the smarmy side of Davy Jones) stand up to the work of any other pop band operating in 1967. Real or fabricated, the Monkees rate with any pop band of their era and More of the Monkees solidifies that position. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Don Randi – Harpsichord, Organ; Michael Rubini – Harpsichord, Organ; David Sackson – Viola; Murray Sandry – Viola; Seymour Barab – Cello; Tommy Boyce – Vocals (Background); Al Casey – Guitar; Al Gafa – Guitar;

For More Adventurous, Rilo Kiley’s Warner-distributed hello to the big time, the Los Angeles band is more cohesive, more spotless, and tidier in its tangle of indie pop, torch song, and too-cool-for-school cynicism than ever before. This time out they favor craft over ruckus, rarefied over reckless. Sometimes Adventurous goes too far — like Belle & Sebastian, RK’s fastidiousness can become a sticky glaze. (The overwrought sway of “Does He Love You?” comes to mind.) But the album is a mostly-perfect collection of the various sounds the band does best, wrapped around easily findable hooks. They’re well-dressed indie kids ready and quite able to charm the mainstream. Jenny Lewis’ vocals are lighter than clouds and Petula Clarksweet, even if she occasionally spits venom. “Any asshole can open up a museum/Put all the things he loves on display,” she dismisses in the Luna-like opener “It’s a Hit.” But Lewis’ characters’ faults and failings are just bruises on the Rilo Kiley fruit, blemishes that characterize the band’s effortlessly clean swirl of live string arrangements, subtle synth/keys, and glowing acoustic guitar. “I Never” is a full-on, cast of thousands soundstage production, a robust, keening ballad filled with pedal steel, fuzzed-out Beatles guitar soloing, and Lewis’ gargantuan voice. The title track takes us back to Rilo Kiley’s earlier work with its atmospheric country feel, while “Love and War [11/11/46]” is refreshingly propulsive — it could be Stereophonics covering Lone Justice. Most of the album’s quieter moments are equally strong, if somewhat grayed out. Adventurous’ stylistic restlessness might take some getting used to for new listeners. But fans from the Saddle Creek days will enjoy the greater attention to detail, and everyone will love the bountiful hooks. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi Performers: Blake Sennett – Optigan, Mellotron, Clapping, Moog Synthesizer, Arp, Vocals, Guitar (12 String), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Jason Boesel – Tambo Drums, Handbells, Metal Pipes, Shaker, Clapping, Tympani [Timpani], Glockenspiel, Conga, Percussion, Drums, Vocals; Adam Mc Carville – Vocals (Background); Clark Potter – Viola; Jamie Williams – Voices; Justin Runge – Vocals (Background); Luke Kellison – Vocals (Background);

The Bloodshot label, generally known for its “insurgent country” music, releases its first soul album, and while the tendency is to call this “insurgent R&B,” Chicago-based singer JC Brooks and his white trio are closer to garage soul. Along the lines of Austin’s Black Joe Lewis and Brooklyn’s Dap-Kings, the group finds its groove in the tough ’60s rumble of Stax and Motown before the latter became overly commercialized. Brooks has a convincing tenor voice and the songs, predominantly written or co-composed by guitarist Billy Bungeroth, tap into the raw power of Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett at their most rootsy. Added sweetening from guest horns, keyboards, and background singers fleshes out the sound, but keeps things unpolished and, well, at least somewhat insurgent. When the band hits a get-down funky James Brown backbeat as on “Baaadnews,” it nails a frisky “Cool Jerk” vibe that is inescapable and hip-shaking. Brooks shifts to falsetto for the smooth, string-enhanced Philly International-styled “To Love Someone (That Don’t Love You)” (one of only two covers, this one originally performed by obscure Chicago soul group the Kaldirons), but ballads are not what the outfit is about. Rather, they excel at a harder-edged R&B, frequently with offbeat themes as on the interestingly named “Sister Ray Charles,” a title that never appears in the song’s lyrics. The other cover, Wilco’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,” is given a fascinating, surging rearrangement and is stamped with the seal of approval from no less an authority than Jeff Tweedy. There’s a nod to the Fine Young Cannibals in the finger-popping “Good Thing” Motown beat of “Everything Will Be Fine,” and while little is unique, there’s plenty of energy and enthusiasm to go around. Brooks and company take an unlikely detour on “Missing You” that seems like they have been listening to the Band, and close with an Impressions/Curtis Mayfield-inspired, politically charged “Awake,” a sweet ballad with somewhat clichéd “this train is bound for glory” words that mix some gospel into the approach. Nothing is extended past its breaking point and the disc winds up in just over half an hour. But, like the best albums soul or otherwise, it leaves you — as the title says — wanting more. ~ Hal Horowitz, Rovi

Live and More

Live and More

$7.94

After becoming the queen of disco thanks to orgasmathon hits like “Love to Love You Baby” and “I Feel Love,” Donna Summer topped off her five-year rise to fame with this live set. Certainly not a contender for first-disc choice, Live and More still works quite well as a ’70s sampler for the converted. And since disco was the party music par excellence, the album’s feel is one of a all-nighter in action. Featuring her signature hits and a fat chunk of disco tracks from the Once Upon a Time record, sides one and three solidify Summer’s reputation as one of the most exciting and slick singers on stage. Balancing out the requisite dance material, Summer spends side two waxing nostalgic via a pop standards medley (“The Man I Love,” “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good,” “Some of These Days”) and some nice jazz and blues-imbued fare of her own. And ending the album on a very high note, Summer indulges in “McArthur Park Suite,” a classic long-player that bookends two of Summer and producer Giorgio Moroder’s pop disco numbers with a dance-friendly take on Jimmy Webb’s monumental classic. Along with cloud-walking bouncers like “I Love You” and “Last Dance,” this closing piece finds Summer at her sophisticated and tuneful best. There’s nothing here to eclipse the original versions of these cuts — save for the Webb cover, which is new — but the Summer faithful will nonetheless want to pick up this very enjoyable concert recording. ~ Stephen Cook, Rovi Performers: Alfred Barr – Viola; Carlena Williams – Vocals (Background); Dara Lynn Bernard – Vibraphone; Dick Hyde – Trombone (Bass); Greg Mathieson – Clavinet, Synthesizer; Leonard Selic – Viola; Mary Bernard – Vocals (Background); Peter Woodford – Guitar (Rhythm); Robert Adcock – Cello; Victor Sazer – Cello; Bob Conti – Percussion; Bob Payne – Trombone; Bobby Shew – Trumpet; Bruce Paulson – Trombone;

A Little More Time: The Very Best of Chairmen of the Board

$14.38

There are many Chairmen of the Board compilations, but this generous 36-track double-disc set gets it right. The band’s catalog is much deeper than the title track and “You Got Me Dangling on a String,” the vocal quartet’s — later threesome’s — biggest hits and timeless soul classics. The two-CD package covers their 1969-1974 history in chronological order, tacking on some solo performances from lead singers General Johnson and Danny Woods. Despite being one of the first signings to ex-Motown songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland’s Invictus label, the trio did not compose most of the Chairmen’s early material. That was farmed out to the Ronald Dunbar/Edith Wayne partnership. Frontman General Johnson then picked up the songwriting reins around 1971 — self-penned music was a rarity among soul vocal group acts of that time — and disc two is loaded with his contributions, with 12 out of its 18 tracks written or co-written by Johnson. Not surprisingly, the earliest material is Motown-oriented, but what makes the music noteworthy is the rotation of lead vocalists. The set is notable due to excellent remastering and its ability to dig deeper into the Chairmen’s catalog due to its extended length. That’s especially apparent in the Sly Stone-penned “Life and Death in G & A, Pts. 1-2,” a nifty — if dated — psychedelic soul suite that is usually truncated on other collections. Most impressive, though, is the Chairmen’s diversity, restlessly shifting from sweet-and-sour soul to grinding funk, rousing gospel, lovely ballads, pop, swamp rock, and even a convincing Chicago blues romp, “Weary Traveler,” played as raw and tough as many established blues bands. Better yet, there aren’t many missteps throughout this compilation’s two-hour playing time. The orchestration, overblown production, and extended spoken word section of Burt Bacharach’s “Only Love Can Break a Heart” seem to aim for Isaac Hayes’ Hot Buttered Soul territory and teeter near pretension, but otherwise there are few weak moments. The liner notes are adequate yet don’t note who sings lead on each track, a major omission. Otherwise, this set is pretty close to perfect, capturing all the highlights and hidden gems from one of soul music’s finest vocal acts, and that’s saying a lot. ~ Hal Horowitz, Rovi

For director George Stevens, THE MORE THE MERRIER would be the final film in his three picture deal with Columbia (the others were Penny Serenade and The Talk Of the Town), as well as his last project before entering the service in the Army Signal Corps film unit. THE MORE THE MERRIER featured terrific performances from its three stars and especially from Charles Coburn, who earned himself a 1943 Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor. Jean Arthur, who Stevens called “one of the greatest comediennes the screen has ever seen,” garnered an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. The film, written specifically for Arthur, also received nominations for Best Motion Picture Story, Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Director. The Last Letters of Thomas More

The Last Letters of Thomas More

$22

“Written from the Tower of London, these letters of Thomas More still speak powerfully today.The story of Thomas More, recently told in Peter Ackroyd’s bestselling biography, is well known. In the spring of 1534, Thomas More was taken to the Tower of London, and after fourteen months in prison, the brilliant author of Utopia, friend of Erasmus and the humanities, and former Lord Chancellor of England was beheaded on Tower Hill. Yet More wrote some of his best works as a prisoner, including a set of historically and religiously important letters.The Last Letters of Thomas More is a superb new edition of More’s prison correspondence, introduced and fully annotated for contemporary readers by Alvaro de Silva. Based on the critical edition of More’s correspondence, this volume begins with letters penned by More to Cromwell and Henry VIII in February 1534 and ends with More’s last words to his daughter, Margaret Roper, on the eve of his execution. More writes on a host of topics-prayer and penance, the right use of riches and power, the joys of heaven, psychological depression and suicidal temptations, the moral compromises of those who imprisoned him, and much more.This volume not only records the clarity of More’s conscience and his readiness to die for the integrity of his religious faith, but it also throws light on the literary works that More wrote during the same period and on the religious and political conditions of Tudor England.”

The Very Best of Echo & the Bunnymen: More Songs to Learn and Sing [CD/DVD]

The Very Best of Echo & the Bunnymen: More Songs to Learn and Sing [CD/DVD]

$11.87

Having preceded the self-titled album, Reverberation, and the late-’90s re-formation that has so far led to four further studio albums and two widely released live sets, Songs to Learn and Sing went over 20 years as the lone introduction to Echo & the Bunnymen. The group has more than doubled its output since the compilation was released, so either a revision or a sequel has been a long time coming. “More Songs to Learn and Sing,” the subtitle of The Very Best of Echo & the Bunnymen, is misleading since the disc is not supplemental. With the exception of “The Puppet,” it contains each of the selections from Songs to Learn and Sing, and it adds ten songs: two from Echo & the Bunnymen, three from Evergreen, one each from What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?, Flowers, and Siberia, in addition to covers of the Doors’ “People Are Strange” (from the Lost Boys soundtrack) and Tim Hardin’s “Hang on to a Dream” (for the completists). Of course, this doesn’t wrap up all the highlights, especially when it comes to the first four albums. And if you’re drawn to the earlier, hungrier, darker material, Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here are top-to-bottom necessary. [The edition released in the U.S. adds a DVD containing eight videos, most of which predate Evergreen.] ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Thomas More: A Biography

Thomas More: A Biography

$18.95

“Over the centuries, biographers of Thomas More have always praised him and made him an example for their own times. He was a man for all seasons. This Tudor prelate and Lord Chancellor of England shared human qualities identifiable in all ages–pride, love, ambition, generosity, hypocrisy, and greed. He was less than common because he was witty and a great storyteller–the best between Chaucer and Shakespeare. Truly, he was a Renaissance man with the contradictions such praise imposes on a towering figure. In Richard Marius’s authoritative and engaging portrait, Sir Thomas More, the martyr and brilliant public figure, is a lesson for our season.”

More of Tom Lehrer

More of Tom Lehrer

$5.58

Digitally remastered edition of this 1959 album. More Of Tom Lehrer is effectively a studio recording of the album An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer, which had been released earlier the same year. Even so, there is still a ‘live’ feel to the album, since recording took little more than three hours at the RCA Studios in New York. The sheer artistry of Tom Lehrer is perhaps best shown in ‘Poisoning Pigeons In The Park’, The Elements’ and ‘Clementine’, but, as the original sleevenotes state, you are spared ‘Mr Lehrer’s tedious spoken commentary on the songs as well as the comparatively live audience which was present at the time.’ 11 tracks.
