Modern Classical Music
What is the difference between modern classical music and classical Music From the past?
Please help if you can!

Harmonic vocabulary has been slowly and constantly expanded throughout western musical history.
The ‘break’ into highly chromatic music and serial music (the originators of serial music Hated the word Atonal – it actually makes no sense = without tones!) is as gradual as any other harmonic development.
It is first very noticable in Wagner: after Wagner it was furthered by Mahler, and early works of Schoenberg and Webern, such as Gurrelieder and Im Sommerwind, are highly chromatic late romantic pieces.
Modern classical (1900 – 1960/70) is often still grounded in older procedures, with distinct themes, bass lines and thematic development. Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Hindemith’s Symphony ‘Mathis der Mahler’, Honneger’s Fifth Symphony, are just a few good examples of new harmony with the older forms and procedures. This Modern Classical period has lots of repertoire which is still ‘old-fashioned’ in this regard.
Serial music did lead composers into newer forms.
Contemporary classical (1960 / 70 to present) presents a huge variety of different approaches to how music is put together, from basic form to pieces more concerned about orchestral colors than line. The variety is really too great to list or discuss. I suggest you look at the list of composers in Wikipedia, Classical Music, Contemporary classical, and try and find some clips to get an idea of the range of variety.
Someone has already mentioned Steve Reich, a good representative of one type of minimalism. Elliot Carter’s works from about 1960 on are both very rich and complex. Witold Lutaslowski was a contemporary composer whose ‘sound’ and approach is again different from Reich and Carter.
I want to re-emphasize the progression has been gradual and steady. So many listeners have little or no experience of listening to anything after 1900. Imagine if you only knew of Renaissance and Baroque music and then were confronted with Wagner or Mahler or Debussy. It could very well all sound like unorganized noise to you.
