Fado, the Soundtrack of a Country

If there is a type of music that can’t be left out of Portugal vacation packages, that music is Fado. Although exists several traditional styles of music in Portugal, Fado is the most important one because it represents the Portuguese soul.

If you look up in a dictionary, the word Fado is defined as destiny, fate. Actually, are the issues connected with life and love deceptions that are portrayed on the lyrics of these songs that many times have a tragic and dramatic component. There are other musical styles but as far as music is concerned, Fado is our treasure and you shouldn’t waste the opportunity to listen to it during your vacation. Fado is connected with the so-called Portuguese fatalism that many say that characterizes these people. It is not a type of music that is easy to listen to because of its sentimentalism but when it is well performed it’s really beautiful to listen to it.

There are two main styles of Fado, the fado of Lisbon and the fado of Coimbra. The first one is typical of the picturesque neighborhoods of Lisbon, like Alfama and Mouraria and it’s linked to the fatality of destiny and to bohemian life. It was shared by nobles, vagabonds and sailors who sang it in a heartfelt and intense way. But it was also sang in a joyful way, talking about love conquests and the life of each neighborhood of Lisbon which Jose Malhoa, the painter of Fado, so brilliantly immortalized in his paintings. The Fado of Coimbra reveals the romantic spirit of the college students who live in the city. Musically is similar to the Fado of Lisbon but the lyrics are more erudite. It is sung only by men who belong to the students musical groups wearing the typical black suit and cape. It became perfect to record the memories of the academic life, the best years of youngsters, the nights spent without sleeping, love deceptions and serenades sung by the window of their love interest.

Nobody knows exactly where the Fado origins lie. There are the ones who defend that Fado is a heritage of the minstrel songs, others say that it came from the voices of the sailors and some believe it came from the Lundum singing of the black slaves from Brazil. The first written records are from the 19th century and in that time it was the singer Severa who introduced Fado in the aristocracy by the romance with the Count of Vimioso.

The best place to listen to Fado during your vacation in Lisbon is the Fado Houses. It is restaurants where usually you can eat very nice food while you listen to a singer and a trio of guitar-players singing and playing acoustics. One of the musicians plays the Portuguese guitar, the main instrument of Fado. When they start singing and playing, silence is imperative in the room and even the waiters stop serving their clients in a respectful attitude.

We couldn’t talk about Fado without referring its greater singer, Amalia Rodrigues. The most charismatic singer of Fado to which we owe the classical black dress with a shawl that she always wore when she sang. She took the Portuguese soul to foreign countries and she amazed audiences with her magnificent voice.

Fado is a symbol of our country and because of that it should be included in every Portugal vacation packages. But mostly is classified as World Music and it maintains its true essence even if it is being modernized by the young generation of Fado singers.

Torch singing is not only for English speakers. The romance languages (including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Catalan) also offer many possibilities for torch singers, and no one knows that better than Rosa Passos. The Brazilian singer has been performing torchy vocal jazz in Portuguese for many years; some have described her as a Brazilian equivalent of the late Shirley Horn, and that comparison is quite accurate on Romance. Many of the things that Horn was known for — subtlety, restraint, intimacy, understated introspection — are easy to find on this excellent release. But while Horn used the English language to get her emotional points across, Passos sticks to Portuguese on Romance — and anyone who doubts that the Portuguese language can be a superb vehicle for torch singing should pay close attention to Passos’ dusky, soulful interpretations of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim (“Por Causa de Você,” “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar”), Djavan (“Alibi”), Ivan Lins (“Doce Presenca”), João Donato (“Cadê Você”) and other well-known Brazilian songwriters. Romance is Passos’ tribute to what could be described as “the Great Brazilian Songbook” (as opposed to the Great American Songbook), and even though she didn’t write any of the lyrics, her relaxed interpretations of these gems always sound very personal. Saying that Passos is relaxed isn’t saying that she doesn’t bring a lot to the songs emotionally; Passos doesn’t feel that she has to shout in order to get one’s attention, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t expressive. Passos is incredibly expressive, and the beauty of the Portuguese language never lets her down on Romance. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Daniel DAlcântara – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Nahor Gomes – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Paulo Paulelli – Bass (Electric), Bass (Acoustic); Fabio Torres – Piano; Lula Galvao – Guitar; Vinícius Dorin – Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor), Sax (Alto)

Romantic inspiration can be found in many places, but song stylist Michael Feinstein finds his in motion picture film scores and Broadway musicals on his third Concord Jazz release. Romance on Film/Romance on Broadway is a two-CD set filled with great romantic ballads such as “The More I See You,” “The Second Time Around,” “All the Way,” and the enduring classic “When I Fall in Love.” Feinstein’s voice is alluring, sophisticated, and comfortable on this excellent collection of popular music that he interprets in so many heartfelt ways. He adds an additional set of lyrics written by Lorenz Hart on “Isn’t It Romantic” that were never included in the original 1932 film Love Me Tonight. On the second disc, he places the emphasis on songs from Broadway musicals with the same sensitive phrasing, nuance, and romanticism. “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” is a harmonic masterpiece. His dreamy reminisces of the heroine from the landmark Broadway musical My Fair Lady also offers superb piano stylings from Alan Broadbent. One of the most romantic love songs on the collection is “As Long as She Needs Me.” Feinstein’s amorous interpretation of the lyrics reveals the true beauty of this great love song. Accompanied by such great musicians as Marian McPartland on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Gary Foster on alto saxophone, Peter Erskine on drums, and Chuck Berghofer on bass, among others, Michael Feinstein takes these songs to a different time and space that is sure to keep lovers of romantic ballads happy for some time to come. ~ Paula Edelstein, Rovi Performers: George Rabbai – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Alan Broadbent – Piano; Bucky Pizzarelli – Guitar; Chuck Berghofer – Bass; Daniel Block – Sax (Alto); Gary Foster – Sax (Alto); Jay Leonhart – Bass; Joe Cocuzzo – Drums; John Oddo – Piano; Marian McPar
