Super Hits $6.38 As advertised, this album contains many of Kris Kristofferson’s “super hits, ” though it’s worth noting that, with the exception of the gold, chart-topping “Why Me,” none of them were super hits for Kristofferson: “Me and Bobby McGee” was a country hit for Roger Miller, then a pop hit for Janis Joplin; “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” was a country hit for Ray Stevens and for Johnny Cash; “For the Good Times” topped the country charts for Ray Price; Sammi Smith did the same with “Help Me Make It Through the Night”; and both Roger Miller and Tompall & the Glaser Brothers had country hits with “Lovin’ Her Was Easier (Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again).” The versions here are Kristofferson’s, with “Me and Bobby McGee,” “The Pilgrim: Chapter 33,” and “Casey’s Last Ride” (the last two among the several songs that weren’t actually hits, but are among the songwriter’s best material) in live renditions. Given its budget price, this ten-track compilation may be the best place for a neophyte to get a sense of the songwriting prowess of a man no doubt better known as a movie actor (in part because all of these songs date from the late ’60s and early ’70s). ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

The film’s director was Sweden’s Lasse Hallström, who later gained infamy for his arthouse success My Life as a Dog (1985). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi they tour his native country. This proves to be a problematic task, with the security surrounding Abba continually thwarting Austin as he attempts to get close to the elusive Swedish foursome. A great way to experience the frenzy that surrounded one of the biggest bands in the world during the 1970s, Hallstrom’s film affords some glorious screen time to the music of Abba, while also encompassing a look at the media circus which slavishly followed them around. |

The Inbetweeners Movie $11.02 The first chance to hear new material from Mike Skinner since the dissolution of the Streets, the official soundtrack to the hit U.K. comedy The Inbetweeners Movie features ten original compositions from the Birmingham street poet alongside several extremely brief snippets of dialogue, and a whole host of other familiar hits which appear throughout the film. Capturing the hedonistic spirit of the plot, which sees the group of misfits embark on a typical lad’s holiday to Malia, Skinner’s contributions are focused firmly on the dancefloor, taking in pulsing Justice-esque electro (“No Problemo”), soulful Italo house (“We Are Go”), and funky, vocodered disco (“Moanatronic 5000″), alongside the squelchy techno ska of “Clunge in a Barrel” (named after one of the show’s most famous slang terms), the blissful, piano-led instrumental “Waving Not Drowning,” and the ambient electro-clash of “Do It.” Allowing his production skills to do the talking, Skinner opts to leave his trademark, laconic stream-of-consciousness vocals out of these proceedings, suggesting that the direction of any future solo material is unlikely to be hinted at here, but it’s a strong first score which shows that despite his recent philosophical output, he still knows how to “have it large.” Elsewhere, only the scuzzy garage rock of the Vines’ “Gimme Love,” the jangly Merseybeat of Miles Kane’s “Quicksand,” and Deer Tick’s lo-fi ballad “Twenty Miles,” join Morning Runner’s theme tune, “Gave Up in Flames,” on the list of ramshackle guitar-band tunes that usually dominate the TV series. Instead, the album is more concerned with the kind of floor-fillers that the character of Neil is famous for robotically dancing along to, from the anthemic vocal house of Axwell’s “Nothing But Love,” to the novelty Euro-pop of Yolanda Be Cool’s “We No Speak Americano,” to beefed-up remixes of hits by KeSha (“Blow”), Calvin Harris (“Feel So Close”), and Everything Everything (“My KZ, UR BF”). The four indie pop inclusions slightly interrupt the flow of the album, but overall, The Inbetweeners Movie OST is likely to be enjoyed by most package holiday clubbers, whether they’re fans of near-the-knuckle schoolboy humor or not. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi Performers: Errol Reid – Vocals |

Hits and More $19.98 2009 two CD set. Guy Mitchell was one of the most popular pre-Rock ‘N’ Roll vocalists whom, to many, evokes the last period of America’s innocence before the Rock revolution. He was also a precursor to the late ’50s teen idols as he was the first major recording artist who’s career was crafted in the studio, by the record company and sold to the public by the way of records and radio, not concerts. His claim to fame began with his double sided hit ‘My Heart Cries For You’ and ‘The Roving Kind’, which rode the charts for 21 weeks and sold nearly two million copies! Also featured is ‘Singing The Blues’, which topped the American charts for 10 weeks. With 23 Top 30 hits in the States and 33 British hits in both the Record and Sheet Music charts along with movie and TV appearances Guy Mitchell was the real deal. Another must have release for fans of the pre-Rock ‘N’ Roll era. Jasmine. |

All Hits $12.79 All Saints weren’t together that long — only two albums and a handful of singles — but that was enough to rack up a bunch of tabloid headlines, several celebrity romances (Shaznay with Damon Albarn, Nicole with Robbie Williams and Liam Gallagher), one skin-baring movie for the sisters Appleton, and several big U.K. hits (and a few minor U.S. hits). It might not be a lot for a hits collection, but it was enough, as the 13-track collection All Hits proves. This is padded out a bit, with two 1998 remixes (one of “Lady Marmalade,” one of “War of Nerves”) and the original hit version of the spectacular “Pure Shores” plus its “2 da Beach U Don’t Stop Remix,” and it bends the rules by featuring “Twentyfourseven,” a hit by Artful Dodger featuring Melanie Blatt’s vocals, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing (particularly in the case of “Twentyfourseven”), since this does consolidate the basic hits — “Pure Shores,” “Never Ever,” “Under the Bridge,” “I Know Where It’s At,” “Black Coffee,” and “Bootie Call” — onto one disc. All Saints did make good albums — both of their records hold their own against the Spice Girls — but inevitably some will just want to hear the hits, and this does an excellent job of serving them up with style. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Melanie Blatt – Vocals; Natalie Appleton – Vocals; Nicole Appleton – Vocals; Sean Spuehler – Keyboards; Shaznay Lewis – Vocals; Steve Sidelnyk – Drums; William Orbit – Keyboards, Guitar, Synthesizer |

Greatest Hits [Greatest Hits and Videos] $19.98 The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Greatest Hits is a compelling listen, culling tracks from the band’s 1989 breakthrough, Mother’s Milk, to its melodic 2002 release, By the Way. In some ways, one could view this as the best of the John Frusciante years, charting most of the band’s work with the talented guitarist after the death of original member Hillel Slovak. The tracks here are all hits, including such stellar singles as “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge,” and Frusciante’s first single after his phoenix-like resurrection from heroin addiction, “Scar Tissue.” It should be noted, though, that as a Warner-issued hits collection such fan favorites as “Taste the Pain” and the touchstone antidrug anthem “Knock Me Down” — both from the 1989 EMI release Mother’s Milk — aren’t included. (Similarly, nothing from the Chili Peppers’ rambunctious early efforts — including 1984′s Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1985′s Freaky Styley, and 1987′s The Uplift Mofo Party Plan — appears on this hits collection.) Nonetheless, Greatest Hits still portrays the band as one of the most consistently brilliant groups of its generation. Helping to paint this picture are such solid cuts as the group’s searing, albeit overplayed, 1989 cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” as well as its rarely available addition to the Coneheads movie soundtrack, “Soul to Squeeze.” Not surprisingly, “My Friends” is the sole cut to make it from the band’s disappointing one-off effort with Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, One Hot Minute. Throw in two new tracks (“Fortune Faded” and “Save the Population”) that easily match the quality of the material collected here, and you’ve got one of the most consistently listenable Chili Pepper releases since Blood Sugar Sex Magik. For fans who gave up after Frusciante left the band, Greatest Hits is the perfect reintroduction. [The limited-edition Greatest Hits and Videos version of the collection comes with an accompanying DVD of Red Hot Chili Peppers videos that differs from the album in that it includes videos for "Aeroplane," "Around the World," and "Zephyr Song" as well as band commentary on each video.] ~ Matt Collar, Rovi Performers: Peter Weiss – Juice Harp; Brendan O’Brien – Mellotron; Aklia Chin – Vocals (Background); Babs – Vocals (Background); Bruno Deron – Vocals (Background); Gail Frusciante – Choir, Chorus; Gretchen Seager – Vocals (Background); |

Greatest Hits [Blackheart] $15.98 Released in conjunction with the major motion picture The Runaways, 2010’s Greatest Hits is a double-disc, 21-track set that offers a basic overview of her hits with the Blackhearts and the work she did afterward, then adds re-recordings of her Runaways hits for good measure. These re-recordings were made for the movie, and are by and large heavier than the originals, so they get the collection off to somewhat of a leaden start, but once they give way to the original recordings, this is a good overview of Jett’s basics. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Epic Movie (Unrated) $12.73 Scary Movie screenwriters Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer join forces to parody the biggest movies ever to hit the silver screen in this comedy that gives such popular box-office hits as Pirates of the Caribbean and Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe the same treatment that Scary Movie gave to the slasher subgenre. A virtual smorgasbord of spoof, Epic Movie tells the tale of four fully grown orphans: one the victim of snakes that attacked her plane, another raised by a kindly Louvre curator, the third a Mexican libre wrestling refuge, and the last an average mutant from an X-community. When the curious quartet visits a sprawling chocolate factory, they stumble across a magical wardrobe which transports them to the enchanted land of Gnarnia. It seems that the wondrous fantasy land has recently fallen under the spell of the evil White Bitch (Jennifer Coolidge), and in order to bring peace back to Gnarnia these four bumbling mortals will have to join forces with a charismatic pirate, a painfully sincere group of aspiring wizards, and one particularly libidinous lion. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Movie Guide back. Best of all, the directors keep a tight ship on the bad language, as befits the PG-13 rating. |
