Rather than just slapping together some pre-existing, heartwarming tunes, the soundtrack to the songwriters-in-love rom-com Music and Lyrics features custom-written songs that lovingly send up the sounds of ’80s and 2000s pop. In fact, pop is so important to Music and Lyrics that “Pop!” is the name of the ’80s group that Hugh Grant’s character is a former member of, and Pop!’s sound is a fusion of New Romantics like ABC and Spandau Ballet mixed with a healthy dose of Wham!’s giddy but more mainstream new wave. On “Pop! Goes My Heart,” Grant’s voice bears an uncanny resemblance to ABC’s suave frontman, Martin Fry. Meanwhile, “Meaningless Kiss” — which was penned by Fountains of Wayne’s chameleon-like songwriter, Adam Schlesigner — is a terrific send-up of Wham!’s “Careless Whisper” that works because it gets all of the nuances right instead of going for obvious parody. Schlesinger also penned the soundtrack’s main love song “Way Back into Love,” which sounds especially charming in the demo duet between Grant and Drew Barrymore. Music and Lyrics also takes affectionate aim at the sound of 2000s pop with two Britney Spears-esque songs: with its twangy guitars and Middle Eastern-inspired melody, “Buddha’s Delight” plays like a more demure version of “Toxic,” while “Slam” nods to the Neptunes’ slinky, percussive production on “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Even with the inclusion of two songs that weren’t created for the movie (the Sounds’ “Tony the Beat” and Teddybears’ “Different Sound”), Music and Lyrics feels more like the soundtrack from a musical than a romantic comedy, and only a few of the songs (“Bootytown,” “Don’t Write Me Off”) feel like obvious parodies — these are the best compliments that you can pay to this kind of project. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Andrew Wyatt – Vocals (Background); Britta Phillips – Vocals (Background); Katie Kresek – Viola; Kelly Jones – Vocals (Background); Lucy Woodward – Vocals (Background); Conrad Harris – Violin; Jack Bashkow – Saxophone; Malte Holmberg – Vocals; Martin Fry – Vocals;

Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore. After languishing in the “where are they now?” bin, an ’80s pop star gets the chance for a comeback when a current chart sensation asks him to write her a song. New Pagan Love Song

New Pagan Love Song

$10.38

Quick on the heels of his two 2003 releases, both titled Sisters (one an LP, one an EP), Paul Brill escaped to his studio and stayed there through the winter of ’03/’04 to sculpt New Pagan Love Song. By shutting himself in and playing the roles of engineer and producer, it is clear Brill afforded himself, in both time and money saved from camping out without hired guns, the room to experiment, twiddle knobs, and edit sounds together to explore a new direction. Toying with electronics and sequencing found sounds can be scary ground to tread, especially for an artist unfamiliar with the territory, considering overemphasizing of computerized clicks and whirs for the sake of texture has been a common pitfall for far too many, but Brill carries off his new direction with the presence of mind to keep it fairly subtle and never sacrificed his knack for engaging songwriting in the process. There are some moments later on New Pagan Love Song where the pageantry of loops and electronic trials are more upfront, even the main source of propulsion, and credit must be given to Brill for both sequencing the album to ease the listener into the depths of his creativity and for always keeping the songs in the same sharp focus exhibited on his earlier records. The introduction to Paul Brill’s new exploration is immediate. Opening with electric piano, vocals with a hefty serving of reverb/delay, and sparse, percussive electronic squiggles, “Trindade” introduces the intensity and precision of New Pagan Love Song and displays the fantastic understanding mixing engineer Nancy Hess has for sonic spatial relations. The entire album spins with this lucidity and feels truly three-dimensional, transforming the reality of sound into an inviting, comfortable and intricate museum of sound artifacts. This musical exploration serves also as a parallel for Brill’s concept of the lyrical core: A story which spans the entire album via elegant wordplay and wisdom that weaves the tale of a troubled amnesiac coming to terms with the disturbing moral indignities and reckless behavior he does not remember committing, but which have landed him in his current situation. Brill is never heavy-handed while delivering this story, but instead he builds the scenario with indirect subtleties, leaving enough room to incorporate a cover of the Doors’ “Indian Summer,” though taken in the context of Brill’s concept, the lyrics present a much darker tone. In every area, New Pagan Love Song is an impressive step for Paul Brill. The complex imagery and the breathing melodies that blanket the recording combined with the delicate mingling of acoustic and electronic sounds make New Pagan Love Song one of the most compelling and stunning albums released in 2004. ~ Gregory McIntosh, Rovi Performers: Andy Cotton – Double Bass; Matt Ray – Double Bass,

Overnite Encore: Lyrics Born Live!

Overnite Encore: Lyrics Born Live!

$8.78

Long known for his dynamic live performance, Quannum rapper (and “first ever Asian astronaut”) Lyrics Born finally gives those fans who haven’t experienced one of his shows what they’ve missed on Overnite Encore: Lyrics Born Live! Taken from two August 2005 concerts in Australia, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne (the 28th and the 26th, respectively), LB, with help from his funk band and wife/backup singer Joyo Velarde, runs through most of the tracks from his two solo albums, as well as two from his Latyrx days (“Aim for the Flickering Flame” and “Lady Don’t Tek No”). The rapper, who utilizes his singsongy delivery during shows, is good at energizing his audience, making sure they’re as excited and into the music as he is, even if it means, as in the case of “Calling Out,” stopping mid-sentence and starting the song over. It’s clearly a practiced technique, but it works, as evidenced by the wild cheering at the end of his sets. Thanks to the band, who’s not afraid to groove, and the numerous shout outs, the versions of the tracks on Overnite Encore are longer than those on the albums, but both Lyrics Born and the band — the bass, guitar, keys, and drums — are funky and engaging enough that nothing seems to drag on, as often happens on live recordings. It would be expected, because of the presence of the band, that “I Changed My Mind,” which he originally performed with the German Poets of Rhythm, would be on the record, but Lyrics Born has a deep enough repertoire that its exclusion isn’t missed too much, and the bonus studio tracks at the end — the dark, pulsing “Knock Knock,” “L-I-F-E,” featuring Bay Area rapper Mistah F.A.B., “I’m Just Raw (Reopened & Remixed),” which has extra verses from Pigeon John and Del tha Funkee Homosapien — are nice reminders of the MC’s versatility. The entire set is fresh, and very fun, showing off the depth of his talents and how well they transfer to the stage, and is a necessity for any Lyrics Born fan, those who have seen him live or not. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi
